LED Upgrades
Our HID upgrade service is simple – we take your old 10w HID light (working or not) and rip out the insides of the head. As the HID bulb is an industry standard size (i.e. MR11), we are able to source the absolute latest LED equivalents and install them in your light head. Once installed with a proper heat sink that channels heat through the aluminium body, the result is a light that is much brighter, much more efficient and very diver friendly.
Being small, we don’t stock parts for years which means we upgrade your light with the absolute best LED solutions as they hit the market. Most dive light vendors are currently 12-18 months behind with their LED technology due to R&D or stock backlog. We also find that products are intentionally limited in output to create price point differentiation in their price range. Our prices are based on actual part and labour cost, so it’s not priced per lumen.
Our standard offering of modifications for the 10w/MR11 style heads is below for you to review, though remember they are more about function than price point. Things to consider when comparing the solutions include:
- Burn-time – how long you want your light to run is the primary decision for many of our customers. Most 10w HID solutions use 12v 4.5 amp hour battery packs, which offer only so much power.
- Beam Angle – beam angles ranging from 15-40 degrees are available for most configurations. Keep in mind though that Intensity is weakened as beam gets wider. Tighter beams tend to work better in low or limited visibility conditions (e.g. cave or wreck penetration, muck diving).
- Alloy Housing – LEDs produce heat which needs to be channelled through to the water. As most 10w HID heads are aluminium this is not a problem, but we have seen some that are Delrin based and are not great candidates to modify.
LD1200 – $300 AUD
Our entry level and best value mod. Takes your light up to 1200 lumen output and has a tight 10 degree beam. With a standard NIMH 4.5 amp hour battery, burn time will be about 4.5 hours (depending on battery condition). Using a ‘keep it simple’ approach, the bare-bones analogue electronics are potted and reliability power the LEDs. When the battery voltage hits 10.v, the LEDs will fade and then flicker, signalling time to turn off the light. The light can be turned on outside of water for a reasonable amount of time and the housing will warm up, though when it head gets hot it is time to turn it off or submerge in water.
LD1450 – $400 AUD
With almost triple the output of a 10w HID, this mod turns your old light into a serious unit with 1450 lumens (about the same as 21w HID). The beam is the same fixed 10 degrees as the LD1200, just more intense. With a standard NIMH 4.5 amp hour battery, burn time will be about 3.2 hours (depending on battery condition). The solution uses high quality micro-processor controlled electronics to deliver more advanced features such as:
- Power Level Warning – medium and low battery warning levels using distinct LED flash sequences (optional at time of assembly)
- Battery Protection – low voltage cut-off mechanism to protect battery from damage (optional at time of assembly, can be set to warn only)
- Thermal protection – light will dim if thermal cut-off temperature is hit (e.g. occurs when light is left on out of water for extended periods)
- Output Settings – configurable to run at 1100 lumens, which extends burn time by up to 30% (configurable at time of assembly)
LD3000 – $425 AUD
If you want max lumens, this is the bad boy for you! We take the electronics from the LD1450 mod and pair them with the latest high-power LEDs available to produce up to 3000 lumens of light output. What you get is a very intense beam with a 15 degree angle that at least matches traditional 35w HID solutions in a much smaller form factor. The wider beam is preferred by some, particularly for wreck diving in clearer waters. With a standard NIMH 4.5 amp hour battery, burn time can be up to 110 minutes (depending on battery condition). The high quality micro-processor controlled electronics deliver more advanced features such as:
- Power Level Warning – medium and low battery warning levels using distinct LED flash sequences (optional at time of assembly.
- Battery Protection – low voltage cut-off mechanism to protect battery from damage (optional at time of assembly, can be set to warn only.
- Thermal protection – light will dim if thermal cut-off temperature is hit (e.g. occurs when light is left on out of water for extended periods)
- Output Settings – configurable to also run at 2200 and 2500 lumens, which extends burn time by up to 30% (configurable at time of assembly)
